Making The Daggerboard

Home ] Up ]

I thought I would spend some extra time and effort trying to make a "proper" foil shape for my dagger-board.  Since I have no expectation of being a super racing machine, this is more just for fun than anything.  Just cutting a taper on both sides would have probably been fine.

Draw out and print the foil shape onto paper
Rip a 1" scrap piece of plywood into 2 1/2" strips and glue back together with hot glue
Glue pattern onto plywood using glue-stick
Pattern
Rough cut out shape using my table saw
Jig
Split the pieces and then glue to outside of 1x12 board at each end of where I wanted the taper Jig
With multiple saw cuts - and lots of sawdust, cut out desired taper shape on the table saw.  Lifting the board up and down and moving it along the saw blade seemed to work better than trying multiple passes.
Jig
Remove the jig from the wood and start smoothing with a block plane.
Jig
After noticable planing and sanding, I used epoxy and filler to smooth the board out.
